  Schaffhausen

SchaffhausenThe largely car-free Old Town has a well-preserved medieval heart of romantic alleys and spacious squares. The seductive charm of the past remains intact to this day: the Old Town is above all a space for living, for shopping, culture and leisure.

Art, architecture, design.

The Hallen für neue Kunst (“Contemporary Art Spaces”) is an impressive exhibition gallery showing major works by important contemporary artists such as Joseph Beuys, Robert Mangold and Bruce Naumann. The Museum zu Allerheiligen, meanwhile, is home to paintings and sculptures from the late Middle Ages up to the present day. A walk through Schaffhausen’s Old Town leads past many of the city’s celebrated oriel windows — there are 171 in all, adorning historic houses with richly painted façades — as well as many tempting shops and boutiques.

Highlights

Die Schwarzen Brüder — the musical. Based on the muchloved book “The Black Brothers” by Lisa Tetzner, this tale of a young Ticino chimneysweep in Milan will receive its world premiere as a musical on the stage of the city’s former steelworks on 31 March — the first of 40 performances.

No e Wili 2007 . The picturesque village of Stein-am-Rhein is the setting for open-air performances of “No e Wili” from 7 July to 11 August. The play is based on a legend of the same name, which has its origins in a piece of local history from the 15th century.
