Bernese Oberland.
Lakes, flower-strewn meadows, and
snow-capped peaks.
Guests have been coming to the unique natural
landscape of the Bernese Oberland for more than 100 years. Our region, at the
heart of Switzerland, has so much to offer that you’ll wish your holidays never
end
Brienz-Meiringen-Hasliberg
A region of all altitudes – from 564 to 4,274
metres above sea level. The name alpenre-gion.ch stands for a world of
mountains, of water, of spectacular nature. It is an alpine paradise for
families, hikers and nature lovers – and also for mountain bikers, mountaineers
and culture fans in search of the best experiences the Alps have to offer.
Typical.
Going up – 316 peaks
The best way to appreciate the magnificent scenery
is on a mountaintop ride –for example, on the modern gondola up to the Alpen
Tower panoramic restaurant on Planplatten (2,245m).
Water reservoir – 158 lakes
In our region water is all-important. Take a ride,
for example, up to Lake Gelmer –on the Gelmer funicular, the steepest in Europe
(106% gradient).
Families welcome
Meet Muggestutz, the oldest dwarf on the
Hasliberg, on one of the two theme routes there. Or how about a dip in the
turquoise Lake Brienz?
Full steam on a journey of
discovery.
Boat rides on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz:
the return of the Belle Epoque
Take a trip back in time: climb aboard the
100-year-old paddle steamer “Blümlisalp”, or the slightly younger “Lötschberg”,
and lose yourself in the glamorous charm of the Belle Epoque. As for a backdrop,
none could be more impressive than the Alpine Big Three: the Eiger, Mönch and
Jungfrau (UNESCO World Heritage), along with the historical churches and castles
on the lakeshore –against which the lush meadows, dark green mountain forests
and clearly defined peaks of the alpine foothills make a striking contrast.
Typical.
A journey into the past…
A touch of nostalgia, a hint of romance… nothing
brings the past back to life in the same way as a good dinner and a glass of
fine wine. All around the lakes are excursions that recreate the magic of a
bygone age – such as a ride on the steam-driven Brienz Rothorn Railway.
… and the future so near
While from December 2007 travellers from the
Bernese Oberland to the Valais will be able to hurtle south at great speed
through the new Lötschberg Base Tunnel, those with more time on their hands can
give themselves a treat: a ride on the BLS RegioExpress through the sublime
mountain-and-valley scenery high above.
When the slopes sparkle white and the mountain peaks glisten in the sun, then
it’s time to embark on new adventures!
